Serenity Park in the city’s southeast corner was the first to receive a Fit-Trail exercise system last year. The system enables people running or walking the trails to intensify their activity with exercises facilitated by workout stations.

The City completed the installation of 7 new workout stations on the popular Lake Elsinore levee. And, have started work on a Fit Trail at Alberhill Community Park in the northern part of the City. Other parks targeted for this equipment by late fall are Lakepoint Park on the northeastern shore and Canyon Hills Community Park farther to the east near the City’s boundary with Wildomar and Canyon Lake.just

“We’re an outdoors enthusiast type of city, and this is another way to get our community outdoors,” City Councilman Brian Tisdale said of the new equipment. “It gives citizens more options.”

As Mayor in 2016, Tisdale launched and spearheaded the City’s Healthy LE campaign, in which the City hosted monthly runs, walks and other activities that showcased various features of the City while encouraging participants to get active, stay motivated and be healthy.

Healthy LE echoes the city’s emphasis on outdoor opportunities in harmony with the City’s slogan “Dream Extreme,” which promotes the municipality as a mecca for adventurous recreation.

“If you look at what we’ve done in the last five or six years, everything has changed to encourage people to be more fitness conscious,” said Tisdale, enumerating facilities such as ball fields, soccer pitches, skate parks, pump tracks and playgrounds that have been added.

“It was a conscious effort by the City Council that originated in 2012 when we held our strategic planning meeting and the council said, ‘This is who we are and this is what we’re going to do.’

“It has changed the image of the City. We’re trying to promote what we really are — a health conscious, active City.”

The placement of nearly 26 work stations in the four locations is being funded by $82,000 in grants from the Western Riverside Council of Governments.

Fit-Trail systems are a series of workout stations composed of durable, treated wood and metal structures. They encourage and enable users to do stretches, sit-ups, leg raises, pull-ups and numerous other movements strengthening the body. Sign panels accompanying the equipment explain how it can be used for specific exercises.

“These trails allow us to maximize the use of the space in our parks and encourages folks to get active and to take additional steps toward better health,” said Assistant to the City Manager Nicole Dailey. “It’s an opportunity to expand your workout and build on strength training for FREE without having to go to a gym.”

In addition to their functional aspects, the work stations increase the City’s visible footprint at the parks where they are being placed.

That is especially true along the levee trail, which stretches about 3 1/2 miles between the inlet channel by The Diamond, the city’s minor-league baseball stadium, and the far southeastern corner of the lake near Lakeland Village.

“We’re trying to make the trails as interactive as possible for use by all people and their level of physicality,” said Community Services Director Johnathan O. Skinner, who oversees the project.

All of the fitness trail equipment is being purchased from Fit-Trails and installed by the City’s Public Works staff.
